Monster Hunter World is the latest installment action role-playing game of CAPCOM’s popular Monster Hunter series. The first Monster Hunter was released back in 2004 on the Playstation 2. Monster Hunter World first released on the PS4 and Xbox One on January 26, 2018. And now, the developers have released a PC version of the game on August 9, 2018 and this is the developer’s first time making a PC version.
If you haven’t played a Monster Hunter title before, it is a game mostly focused on combat, crafting, and gathering. The game can be played in single-player mode or in multiplayer mode of up to 4 players online. The combat is very action oriented and it requires players to be very skillful when they engage an enemy. We will tackle each components that make the game unique and impressive.
You will spend majority of your time at the town or your base of operations. Here, you will see yourself talking to many NPCs (Non-Playable Characters) who will assist you by crafting new weapons and armor, buying and selling items, giving you a wide variety of quests, and eating food to gain buffs. We found ourselves going all over the town since the various NPCs are located all over the place.
Luckily, the town is populated with other NPCs who just roam around and interact with the environment. Most of these NPCs are just there to make sure that the town doesn’t feel empty or barren. You might even find some of them going on their own adventures.
In Monster Hunter World, there is no such things as leveling up to get stronger. If you want to get stronger, you need to upgrade your equipment. In order to upgrade your equipment, you need to hunt monsters and carve out their body to get materials. It is a never ending process until you finally get your ultimate gear.
There are about 14 weapon types available in Monster Hunter World and each weapon offers its own distinct abilities. Aside from the weapons, you will slowly begin to unlock various armor sets as you continue to play the game.
The World Map
The game offers various areas which you slowly unlock as you progress through the story. You may have to venture out into a forest area, sometimes you will have to go to muddy swamps or the desert, and sometimes you go through areas that you may have no words to describe due to its beauty. Ultimately, the various areas that you explore are big enough to get you lost. We even complained that the areas are too big and we can’t seem to find the monster we need to hunt.
We mentioned that the game can be played either single-player or multiplayer of up to 4 players. If you are ever playing alone, you have a palico which is a cat companion to support you in your fight against these monsters. When fighting alone, you tend to focus on doing combos and dealing damage to the monsters. However, it isn’t the case when you are playing with other people. Not only do you have to focus on the monster, but you have to coordinate with your team so that they don’t accidentally hit you. Your team members can actually interrupt your actions if they accidentally hit you as they attack.
During combat, we prefer to use the charge blade since it deals a lot of damage and it can switch between a sword and shield or a two handed axe. We also tend to swap to the insect glaive, since it offers a lot of mobility, cutting power, and damage. If we are fighting a tough skinned monster and we want to break their skin, we even go as far as to use the hammer. The hammer offers a lot of power and it can smash through that tough defense in no time.
If you play the game, you will always be tempted to try out the other weapons since each weapon offers a different gameplay experience. The weapons in Monster Hunter World have their own playstyle, strengths and weaknesses. It is up to the player’s skill and preference to choose the weapons that they enjoy using.
Monster Hunter World offers a lot of content. Although we only played 64 hours or so, we can see ourselves playing this game for hundreds of hours. The game keeps bringing out harder and harder challenges that keeps making it interesting. Although, there are a few problems with the servers, CAPCOM is trying their best to fix it. Once they fix the servers, playing Monster Hunter World with your friends will add a few more hundred hours to your game time. Hunting monsters with your friends is just an enjoyable and fun experience.
