A long, long, long, really long time ago in Ancient China, the Jade emperor wanted to select 12 animals to be his guard. He sent an immortal messenger to spread the word to the animals that whoever arrives at the Heavenly Gate early will have a higher rank.
And so the race begins…
The animals thought that the path of the race was easy but they did not expect one thing.. They all have to cross the river to get to the heavenly gates.
The Rat (who was quick to respond) came in first. The Rat jumped on the Ox when it sees the Ox crossing the river and quickly jumped out and dashed through the Heavenly gates. Thus, Rat was first and Ox was second.
Next came Tiger and then the Rabbit. The Tiger was quick and fast but had a hard time crossing the river but the Tiger prevailed anyways and came in third place. The Rabbit, who hopped from stones and logs to cross the river, came in fourth.
The Dragon came flying in fifth but the Jade emperor was curious as to why it did not came in first (since it had wings to fly around without problems). The Dragon explained that it had to stop and make rain to the people and creatures on Earth which pleased the Emperor.
Then came the Snake (who kind of looks like Dragon Jr) who sneakily showed up when the Horse was almost at the gate.
The Goat, the Monkey and the Rooster came in next. All 3 decided to help each other cross the river and thus reaching the gate for the eighth, ninth, and tenth place.
The Dog came next. The Dog explained to the emperor, as to why it came late, because it could not resist playing at the river. The Pig was the last one for it got hungry and had to eat a feast which made it sleep before finishing the race.
And that is how the 12 Zodiac Animals are created..
Happy Chinese New Year!
